SPARKLING SAKE RECALLED IN ASIA FOR RED YEAST RICE WHICH CAUSED 5 DEATHS IN JAPAN

A Japanese made sparkling rosé sake has been recalled in Japan, Singapore and Macau because it contains red yeast rice (beni koji), the supplement in the centre of a health scare in Japan leading to at least five deaths and 157 hospitalisations.
The Japanese manufacturer of Mio Sparkling Sake Premium Rosé, Takara Shuzo Co., announced the recall of 18,000 750ml bottles and 78,000 300ml bottles of the product in Japan on 23 March.
The recall came as a request from Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, which produces the beni koji, following complaints about kidney problems associated with the consumption of the supplement.
The health scare is still unfolding in Japan, local media reported that five people have died from the the beni koji supplement and 157 have been hospitalised so far.
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) recalled Mio Sparkling Sake Premium Rosé on 26 March following the recall in Japan.
The SFA said: “The Japanese drugmaker of the beni koji had voluntarily recalled this health supplement following complaints about kidney problems associated with the consumption of the supplement.”
“As a precautionary measure, SFA has directed the importer, Pan Pacific Retail Management (Singapore), to recall the implicated products. The recall is ongoing.”
SFA advised those who have bought the recalled products not to consume it, while those who did and are unwell should seek medical attention.
In Macau, the Municipal Affairs Bureau has also warned the public to stop consuming the products.
