Japan’s Château Mercian and Chile’s Concha y Toro are collaborating to produce wine styles with the view of boosting popularity of these wines in their domestic and international markets.

Dubbed Pacific Link Project, winemakers at Château Mercian – which is the wine arm of drinks giant Kirin – and Concha y Toro will work together and produce wine styles that will hopefully raise the profile of their wines in each other’s market as well as globally.

The companies aim at improving the standing of Japanese wine at home and abroad and give Chilean wine a “more premium” position in Japan.

The first wine developed by the two companies was launched in Japan last week, Château Mercian Iwade Koshu Amicis 2023 is a white wine made from the iconic Japanese Koshu grape.

It is called Amicis, meaning friends, as this wine will further deepen the bond between Concha y Toro and Château Mercia.

The company plans to start exporting the first wine made together with Concha y Toro to Singapore this year through Concha y Toro’s distribution network.

The next wine to be launched by the companies will be a Chilean red, details will be announced later.

“Although the countries and winemaking environments are different, the companies’ shared belief in winemaking and desire for a better future resonated with each other and led to the realisation of this project. Through it, we hope to advance each other’s winemaking and contribute to a more attractive future for the wine industry,” Château Mercian marketing executive Aya Jindo said.

The company is also hoping the tie-up with Concha y Toro will support Château Mercian’s export business.

Château Mercian generated overall sales of ¥1 billion (USD6.6 million) in 2023. Only one percent of these sales was made outside Japan, export markets include Hong Kong, Singapore, USA, UK and Italy.
