PERNOD RICARD SALES DECLINED 7.6% DRAGGED BY USA AND CHINA

French spirits giant Pernod Ricard reported a 7.6 percent sales decline from July to September this year, blaming weak consumer demands in USA and China.

Sales in the USA fell 16 percent during the period, while that of China fell 27 percent, as global tariff war and weak economies further pressure the spirits sector.

The company said it expects less pronounced declines in the USA and China in the second half of the financial year, boosted by higher sales of Cognac in duty-free stores and an easier base of comparison against a year ago.

The company had already braced the market for a tough first quarter and it kept its guidance for the full year and beyond unchanged.

Almost all global spirits companies have suffered as a sales boom seen after the COVID-19 pandemic went into reverse, more recently exacerbated by tariffs on Cognac imports in China and on EU goods entering the USA.

The company said it was catching up with rivals in the USA, while in China, sales around the Mid-Autumn Festival did indicate a better underlying performance than in the July-September quarter.

Pernod also counts on India, its no.2 market, to boost performance later in the year as the impact of July's steep rise in excise tax in the second-most populous state of Maharashtra is digested. The company's sales boosted 3% in the quarter from July to September.
