Wine consumption in China has dropped 17.4 percent in 2020, while the country’s wine production was down 16 percent, according to the latest report released by International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).

World consumption of wine dropped 2.8 percent last year, representing a decline third year in a row. It is at its lowest level since 2002, despite general population growth during this period.

Apart from China, wine consumption in Spain was down 6.8 percent, and down 6 percent in Canada.

Some countries managed to buck the trend, consumption was up 7.5 percent in Italy, up 6.5 percent in Argentina and a stellar 18.4 percent in Brazil.

"Brazil has increased a lot the e-commerce ways of selling wine. It's impressive," said OIV Director General Pau Roca.

Overall world wine exports were down 1.7 percent by volume but a higher 6.7 percent by value.

"We have seen everywhere a drop in price," Roca said. "France has lost more than €1 billion in export value," Roca added.

As for wine production, it was up 1 percent worldwide compared to 2019, but still at low level historically.

Wine production was down 16 percent in China in 2020, down 17 percent in Argentina, and between 11 and 13 percent in the USA, Australia and Hungary.

But there were big increases in Spain with a 21 percent jump, and an 11 percent increase in France.

France, Italy and Spain combine to produce 53 percent of the wine in the world. The EU makes 63 percent of the world's wine; the USA is the largest non-EU producer, making 9 percent.

Total vineyard area continued a 17-year pattern of steady decline, mostly because the EU has imposed caps on new plantings.

Spain and France have the most vineyard acreage in the world, but China, the world's 10th-largest wine producer, is third in vineyard acreage because of the planting of table grapes in the country.

Turkey is fifth, ahead of the USA, Argentina and Chile, but most Turkish grapes are not used to produce wine.
