A premium Cabernet Sauvignon from India’s Nashik region is now available in British supermarket chain Waitrose with a retail price of £19.99, it is believed to be the first premium Indian label to be available in UK supermarkets.

The wine is produced by Vallonné Vineyards, the label launched by Waitrose is its Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 10th Edition Special Label 2016.

Described as India’s first boutique winery and vineyard, Vallonné Vineyards situates in India’s Nashik wine region, it rests on the slopes of the Sahyadri ranges, near the waters of the Mukhne Lake and overlooking the Kavnai peak.

The winery’s website said it produces premium French-styled wines with varietals and blends that are unique in the Indian wine market.

Waitrose is a higher-end supermarket chain in the UK, it has seen an increase in demand for wines from lesser-known countries in recent years, sales of this category increased 91% compared to last year.

Xenia Ruscombe-King MW, Waitrose’s wine buyer, said the Indian winemaking industry has been going from strength to strength over the last 20 years. She said there are now some fantastic quality wines being produced to rival those from classic winemaking countries.

This is not the first time Waitrose introduced Indian wines to their shelves. In 2011, Waitrose became the first UK supermarket to stock wines from the sub-continent as part of a showcase of unusual wines from across the world.

The two wines being introduced were Zampa Syrah 2008 and Ritu Viognier 2010, made from grapes grown in the Maharashtra region of India, south of Mumbai on the western coast.

Back then the retail prices for the Syrah was £8.49 and £6.99 for the Viognier. Despite initial suspicions, the sales of both wines was said to have done very well.
