The value of Australian wine exports dropped 30 percent to AUD2.03 billion (USD1.45b) last year due to the punitive anti-dumping tariffs imposed on Australian wine by the Chinese authorities.

According to the 2021 exports report released by Wine Australia today, almost AUD1b was wiped off the value of Australian wine exports to mainland China in 2021 representing a 97 percent drop to just AUD29million.

Compared to 2020, there was a 93 percent drop in the volume of wine exports to China to just 6.4 million litres.

Excluding China, value of Australian wine exports increased by 7 percent to AUD2b, the first time that these exports topping the AUD2b mark since 2009.

Exports valued at above AUD10 per litre increased by 49 percent, indicating that demands for higher value products have picked up in other markets as well, especially in Asian markets.

The value of Australian wine exports to Singapore lifted 108 percent to AUD166m, to South Korea was up 74 percent to AUD47m and to Taiwan up 65 percent to AUD31m.

“The pandemic is still disrupting the on-trade, the global freight crisis is continuing to cause shipping delays and increased freight costs, and while there was export growth to many destinations, it will take time to offset the loss in trade to mainland China,” said Rachel Triggs, Wine Australia’s Corporate Affairs and Regulation General Manager.

“This is not something that will happen overnight, nor within a year. But the Australian wine sector is resilient, and there are early signs that hard work in expanding and diversifying markets is paying off,” Triggs added.

The exports report released today is the first to reflect the full year performance since China imposed the punitive tariffs on Australian wine imports.

China announced anti-dumping and anti-subsidies investigations on imported Australian wines in August 2020. A preliminary tariff of up to 212 percent was announced in November that year. A final verdict was decided in March last year which said a tariff of up to 218 percent will be levied for a period of five years.
