According to the Macau Gongbei Border Customs, 17 special response groups were dispatched on 10 May to raid a number of locations in Zhuhai, Zhongshan and other cities in a joint operation with the Zhuhai police.

Police had also seized some 2,000 bottles of liquor goods, worth some RMB3 million, and a batch of cash from two minivans suspected for being used for smuggling.

Customs officials believed the owner of the raided Zhuhai liquor store, a native of Jieyang city in Guangdong province, is a suspected ring leader of the smuggling operations.

The gangs were said to have repeatedly ordered branded liquors and wines, thought to worth some RMB135 million, from Macau merchants and then smuggled them into mainland China to avoid paying tariffs and taxes.

They then transported the smuggled goods to liquor stores for shop sales or to warehousing facilities where they were packaged for online sales.
