An Australian wine club will give out a bottle of Yamazaki 55 year old (YO) whisky worth more than half a million US dollars to a lucky member in a relaunch lottery.

The Vintage Cellars Wine Club will be relaunched as the VC Club from 2 March, it will offer a range of benefits and exclusive offers to its members, including the chance to win the bottle of Yamazaki 55 YO.

VC Club members who makes a purchase of AUD100 (USD73) or more between 2 March and 26 April will go into the lottery to win the precious bottle of Japanese whisky.

The winner will be announced shortly after the eight-week long competition ends on 26 April.

The latest sales price of Yamazaki 55 YO was USD559,200, it was sold to an unnamed customer from China by Unifree Duty Free shop at the Istanbul Airport in Turkey.

This price was almost 30 percent lower than another bottle bid at USD776,000 at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport Retail in October last year and a bottle sold in an auction by Bonham Hong Kong in 2020 for USD795,000.

Vintage Cellar's Business Category Manager Ed Scully said it was an exciting giveaway for their members.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate our new loyalty program than by giving one lucky VC Club member this incredibly rare bottle of whisky, one of the most sought-after spirits in the world,” he said.

Yamazaki 55 YO is the oldest single-malt whisky ever released by the Yamazaki Distillery. The bottles are considered highly rare because the blend includes whiskies distilled under the supervision of the company's founder, Shinjiro Torii.

Japan’s Suntory Group, the current owner of the Yamazaki Distillery, has issued a total of 200 bottles of Yamazaki 55 YO in two batches.

The first batch of 100 bottles was released to Japanese domestic consumers through a lottery system in 2020.

The second batch of another 100 bottles was released in 2021 to the rest of the world, with a number allocated to Suntory’s key retail partners.

Suntory had put a recommended retail price of USD60,000 per bottle for both releases.
