JAPAN AND THAILAND WIN BIG IN ASIA’S 50 BEST RESTAURANTS 2022

Japanese restaurants win big in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022 awards announced yesterday, with Den and Florilège in Tokyo winning first and third spots while another 9 made to the list of 50.

Thailand also performed well claiming nine spots with Sorn in Bangkok claiming second spot.

Singapore won seven places, while Hong Kong claimed only six spots down from last year’s 11, with 2021 top restaurant The Chairman dropping to fifth place.

This is the 10th anniversary of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, yesterday’s ceremony was held physically in Bangkok, Macau and Tokyo simultaneously and was live-streamed on YouTube.

Voted by over 300 experts spread across the continent, this year’s voting process was adjusted in consideration of pandemic restrictions.

Top restaurant Den in Tokyo first made to the list at number 37 in 2016, head chef Zaiyu Hasegawa offers a playful and innovative take on Japan’s multi-course kaiseki cuisine.

This is the second time for a Japanese restaurant to take the top spot in the award’s 10-year history.

In second place is Sorn in Bangkok, patron chef Supaksorn Jongsiri transformed his encounters with southern Thai food into an innovative menu with no compromise on chillies and spices.

Third on the list is Florilège in Tokyo, head chef Hiroyasu Kawate focuses on using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients to make distinctive Japanese dishes.

In fourth place is Le Du in Bangkok, fifth is The Chairman in Hong Kong, sixth is La Cime in Osaka, seventh is Sühring in Bangkok, eighth is Odette in Singapore, ninth is Neighborhood in Hong Kong, and 10th is Nusara in Bangkok.

The Highest Climber Award goes to Ode in Tokyo, which rose 14 places to number 13. The Highest New Entry Award is awarded to Villa Aida in Wakayama of Japan, which debuted at number 14.

Restaurants in mainland China also performed well this year claiming four spots compared to just one last year. Fu He Hui in Shanghai jumped from number 22 to 12, and is joined by Ensue in Shenzhen, Da Vittorio and Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet, both in Shanghai, at 19th, 28th and 39th places respectively on this year’s list.
