Chilean wine exports to China grew 38.1 percent in value to USD256 million in 2021, making China Chile’s biggest wine export market, according to data from Vinos de Chile.

Not only has export to China recovered to pre-pandemic level, Vinos de Chile also believed the Chinese market will keep driving growth and represents great opportunities for Chilean wine producers.

"China should be an important focus of growth, we currently has the second biggest market share (in China) after France," said Angélica Valenzuela, Commercial Director of Vinos de Chile.

Valenzuela attributed the strong growth in China to the low per capita wine consumption and the loss of market share by Australian wines due to the punitive tariffs.

Globally, shipments of Chilean wines grew 8.2 percent in 2021 to USD1.6 billion, while volume growth was just 1.1 percent with a total of 53.6m boxes exported.

The average price rose 7 percent compared to 2020 reaching USD29.6 per box, indicating that higher priced segment performed well in 2021.

“During the pandemic, consumers turned to higher priced wines as a consolation. This phenomenon was worldwide and Chile was not left out of this trend. On the other hand, our efforts towards premiumisation are beginning to bear fruit,” said Valenzuela.

Brazil was Chilean wines’ second biggest export market in 2021. A total of 7.7m boxes worth USD183m were shipped, representing declines of 7.4 percent in volume and 0.4 percent in value.

While the United Kingdom came third with nearly 6m cases worth USD166m being shipped in 2021, representing growths of 0.8 percent and 9.4 percent respectively.

Vinos de Chile is positive about the prospect of Chilean wine exports in 2022 given the level of vaccination in the world, despite that the pandemic is still on-going.
