Tiansai Vineyards in Xinjiang autonomous region of China has sent samples of their Marselan wine and Marselan cutting to space in an experiment aiming at improving the genetics of their crops.
Chinese media reported that the experiment was carried out in association with AZSPACE in a suborbital test flight of the DEAR-7 spacecraft on 4 May.
The launch took place in Yuli in Bazhou county in Xinjiang, Chinese media said the test flight with the wine and cutting samples onboard was a successful one.

Chinese media quoted Tiansai Vineyards owner, Chen Lizhong, as saying that they will now study the changes in the samples after staying in space and will explore genetic optimisation with the data collected.
It’s not known whether a brief stay in the space like this will bring changes substantial enough to allow valuable scientific study.
An earlier French experiment has sent wine and cuttings to the international space station for one year.
Established 12 years ago, Tiansai Vineyards situates in the Yanqi Basin in the northeastern edge of the Taklimakan Desert.
Tiansai’s vineyards are planted with international varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Viognier, it has added Marselan to its portfolio in recent years to tap its rising popularity in China.
