Hong Kong’s nightlife will return as bars and clubs are allowed to reopen later this month after five months of closure.

The Hong Kong government today announced the second phase of reopening, bars, nightclubs, party rooms, karaoke lounges will be allowed to reopen from 19 May and operate until 2am everyday. But they can only accommodate 4 guests per table.

The city’s bar industry welcomed the news saying that operators do not have to continue to wait indefinitely, while all other sectors of the hospitality industry are allowed to reopen in an earlier phase of reopening on 21 April.

Ben Leung Lap-yan, charter president of the Licensed Bar and Club Association of Hong Kong, who earlier criticised the Hong Kong government as discriminating the bar industry, said the rule of 4 guests per table is still stricter than other hospitality venues.

Leung said it is difficult to predict if the reopening will allow bar and club owners to claw back enough businesses to avoid permanent closures.

From Thursday, restaurants will be allowed to accommodate eight diners per table, up from the current four, and extend dine-in service to midnight, up from the current 10pm, to allow families to celebrate Hong Kong’s Mother’s Day which will fall on 8 May.

Additionally, up to 120 people will also be allowed for wedding banquets from the current 20.

Swimming pools, beaches and water playgrounds will be reopened too and users will be allowed not to wear their face masks at outdoor sports venues.

Hong Kong had largely succeeded in controlling COVID outbreaks until the emergence of the Omicron variant, the city introduced tough restrictive measures in January in an attempt to halt the spread of the virus.

The city reported 283 cases today, down substantially from the peak of the outbreak in March, when over 30,000 daily infections were reported.
