FIRST IN UAE: ABU DHABI MICRO-BREWERY TO SERVE LOCALLY FERMENTED BEERS

A craft brewery will start selling locally made beers in Abu Dhabi this month, making it the first ever company to legally make and sell alcohol in United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Craft by Side Hustle, an American-run restaurant with a micro-brewery, has secured a licence from the Abu Dhabi government following a rule introduced in 2021 which allows licence holders to ferment alcoholic beverages for consumption on site.

The new restaurant is located on Abu Dhabi’s Al Maryah Island, in the luxury retail, dining and entertainment complex called The Galleria.

It will start serving customers its own beers at around 45 dirhams (USD12.26) later this month during a soft opening, a grand opening has been planned in February next year.

The goal is to make 75 different kinds of beer over the next year, though only five or 10 might be available at any given time.

In the UAE, laws governing alcohol are set by each emirate, not at the federal level.

For example in Dubai, retail stores selling imported beers, wine and hard liquor are commonplace, and free-standing restaurants and pubs with alcohol licences exist throughout the relatively liberal emirate.

Although Dubai is the emirate which is the most relaxed about alcohol sales, its neighbouring Abu Dhabi has taken the lead in allowing alcohol fermentation and is the first emirate to allow their on-site consumption.
