KIRIN: CHINA & ASIA TOPPED WORLD BEER CONSUMPTION CHART

China was world’s largest beer-consuming country for the 19th year in 2021, downing 38.1 billion litres or 20.5 percent of global consumption, according to Japanese beer giant Kirin’s latest Global Beer Consumption Report.
Released in December 2022, the report covers findings from 170 major markets worldwide. It finds that Asia has the highest beer consumption as a region, consuming 58.3b litres or 31.4 precent of world’s total.

The Asian markets made up a total of six of the 25 top beer consumption markets worldwide, with China in first place followed by Japan (8th), Vietnam (9th), India (14th), South Korea (21st) and Thailand (24th).
In 2021, China was the only major Asian market which has recorded an increase in beer consumption, up by 5.6 percent.
Japan saw a decrease of 5.2 percent to 4.1b litres, its first decline in 15 years. Vietnam’s consumption dropped 5.5 percent to 4.2b litres, South Korea dropped 3.2 percent to 1.88b litres and Thailand dropped 3 percent to 1.75b litres.

The USA was the second biggest beer consuming country in 2021 after China, with 24.2b litres or 13 percent of global consumption. Brazil came in third with 14.5b litres or 7.8 percent of world’s total.
As far as per capita consumption is concerned, the Czech Republic was world’s no. 1 in 2021 with each Czech consuming 84.1 litre of beer on average.
Overall, global beer consumption grew 4 percent in 2021 to reach 185.6b litres in 2021, which is an equivalent of 293.2b 633ml beer bottles.
