Consumers in Indian capital New Delhi are buying an average of 1.38 million bottles of liquor a day in December 2022, this figure means that 2022 saw the best end of year sales of liquor in four years in the city.

Quoting an excise department official, local media reported that about 11m bottles of liquor worth INR2.18 billion (USD26.3 million) were sold during the week between Christmas and New Year’s day.

The highest daily liquor sale was recorded on New Year’s eve when 2.03m bottles worth USD5.46m were sold.

In December 2021, the average daily sale of liquor bottles was 1.25m, in 2020 it was 1.29m, while 2019 saw the daily average sale of 1.25m bottles for the month.

Currently, liquor is being sold in the city through some 550 liquor shops run by four Delhi government undertakings. It is also available at bars in more than 900 hotels, pubs and restaurants across the city.
