Vietnamese businessman Viet Nguyen Dinh Tuan, owner of the world’s most valuable whisky and cognac collections, was the anonymous bidder for world’s biggest whisky bottle called the Intrepid at an auction held in Edinburgh last year.

Certified by the Guinness World Records as the world’s biggest, the Intrepid stand 5 feet 11 inches tall with 311 litres of 32YO Macallan single malt in it, was sold for £1.1 million (USD1.4m) to the dedicated collector who is based in Ho Chi Minh city.

The bottle was named by Daniel Monk of the drinks wholesaler Rosewin Holdings, who said the Intrepid is in honor of the achievements of 11 pioneering British explorers, including Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Dr Geoff Wilson, Karen Darke, Olly Hicks and Jamie Ramsay.

"The history and traditions of whisky-making give each one its rarity, and that’s the value I see in each bottle. I was enticed to acquire the Intrepid for three main reasons: the fact it’s the world’s biggest bottle, it contains Macallan and because I was inspired by the record-breaking achievements of the 11 explorers depicted on the bottle’s label," Viet told local media.

The Guinness World Records confirmed in 2019 that Viet’s whisky collection is the most valuable in the world.

“I’ve been spending my spare time collecting these bottles for decades,” Viet told local media.

The collection comprises 535 of the rarest, oldest and finest bottles of Scotch and Japanese whisky.

Highlights include three bottles of the iconic 1926 Macallan 60YO, dubbed the holy grail of fine and rare whisky, a bottle of the same expression has achieved hammer price of £1.2m in 2019.

And in 2022, Guinness World Records again confirmed that Viet’s cognac collection is the most valuable in the world.

The collection comprises 574 of the world’s rarest, oldest and finest cognac bottles with total value of USD22.7 million after audition.

The rarest Cognac bottle in Viet’s collection is the 9-litre Louis XIII Le Salamanazar, a one-of-a-kind bottle which is said to worth USD1.5m.
