China’s Ningxia wine region has produced 140 million bottles of wines worth RMB40 billion (USD563.4 million) in 2023, according to latest data released by the local government.
Total area under vines in the region reached 602,000 acres (40,133 hectares) in 2023, an increase of 19,000 acres from previous year.
China unveiled an ambitious 5-year plan for Ningxia’s wine making industry in 2021 aiming at quadrupling annual output value by 2025 to reach RMB100b.
In this plan, area under vine was planned to reach 600,000 acres by 2022, producing 200 million bottles annually with an output value of RMB50b.
And by 2025, it is expected that area under vine will reach one million acres, producing 300 million bottles annually with an output value of RMB100b.
Judging from the latest data, the Ningxia region has fallen behind its ambitious 5-year plan, particularly in the target related to production capacity and output value.
Outlined in the “Ningxia Wine Industry Development Plan” unveiled in 2021, the plan will see the region in northwestern China develop into a high-value, high-quality and high-tech wine producing area.
The plan also called for the emergence of 10 world-class wine brands, 20 leading wine-making enterprises in 5 major winery clusters in Ningxia.
Before the ambitious place was adopted, Ningxia had 496,000 acres of farmland under vines in 2019, producing 130 million bottles of wine annually with an output value of RMB26.1b.
