S. KOREAN HOSPITALITY GOT LEGAL PERMISSION TO SERVE LIQUOR BY THE GLASS

Restaurants in South Korea will be legally allowed to serve liquor by the glass starting next month in a significant shift in alcohol sales regulations.

The country’s Ministry of economy and finance announced a proposed revision of legislation that will allow sales of liquor servings by the glass, or in units smaller than bottles.

The revision will come into effect next month following the legislative announcement.

The revision will establish a legal basis for such sales that were previously permitted only through internal regulations of the national tax service, lacking a clear legal foundation.

Before 2022, selling alcoholic beverages by the glass, except cocktails and draft beer, was considered illegal under liquor tax laws.

In January last year, the national tax service amended the rule to permit the sales of alcoholic beverages in small servings recognising the change in consumption behaviour among consumers.

But the related legislation remained unchanged until now.

With the rapid inflation in liquor prices, South Korean hospitality venues have increasingly been selling small servings of liquor, particularly Soju.

When the revision of regulation comes into effect next month, it is expected that ordering liquor by the glass will become even more popular.
