Japan’s Mercian winery, a leading wine subsidiary of Kirin Holdings, has rolled out an enhanced full-cycle support initiative for Japanese domestic wineries, aiming to address industry bottlenecks and drive the growth of the country’s fragmented wine sector, with a target to quadruple its support service revenue within 2026.
Mercian’s upgraded program expands beyond traditional viticulture and winemaking consultation, offering end-to-end assistance covering grape sapling procurement, sustainable cultivation guidance, winemaking equipment sourcing, sales channel access and regional wine tourism development.
The initiative primarily targets small and medium-sized family-owned wineries in major Japanese wine-producing regions including Yamanashi, Nagano and Hokkaido, which face constraints in technical resources and market reach.
Japan’s domestic wine industry accounts for merely 5 percent of the national wine consumption, plagued by high production costs, scattered industry resources and limited global visibility, in sharp contrast to the international success of Japanese whisky and sake.
Mercian’s comprehensive support model fills a critical market gap, providing tailored technical expertise adapted to Japan’s unique terroir and climate, as well as access to its established domestic and international distribution networks including global wine trade fairs.
As a pioneer in local winemaking, Mercian has long focused on promoting Japanese wine development.
In 2025, the company shifted its focus from imported wines to domestic products, discontinuing Beaujolais Nouveau imports and achieving a doubling of sales for Japanese nouveau wines.
Industry observers note that rising global interest in premium regional wines presents a growth opportunity for Japanese wine.
Mercian’s support program is expected to elevate product quality and market exposure of local wineries, further unlocking the potential of Japan’s domestic wine industry amid the expanding Asia premium wine market.
