JAPAN OVERTAKES CHINA TO BECOME ASIA’S LARGEST WINE IMPORTING COUNTRY

Japan has surpassed mainland China to become Asia’s biggest wine importer by both volume and value in the first half of 2026, according to official customs trade statistics, marking a notable shift in regional wine dynamics

Japanese customs data shows the country brought in 110.54 million litres of wine in H1 2026, a modest 0.72 percent year‑on‑year volume dip.

Import value rose 5.8 percent to approximately USD 757 million, pointing to stronger consumer appetite for higher priced bottled wines.

By comparison, mainland China recorded wine imports of 101.4 million litres, falling 10.98 percent year‑on‑year.

Import value edged up only 0.83 percent to USD 710.2 million, driven by premium wine purchases while bulk wine shipments declined sharply.

Trade analysts note that Japan did not achieve top position through explosive import growth.

Instead, the shift stems largely from a substantial volume contraction in China’s inbound wine market.

“Japan’s wine import volume stayed broadly flat, while China’s total import volume fell by more than one tenth,” one trade observer commented.

“This is a market share change created more by China’s slowdown than by Japan’s rapid expansion.”

China’s wine import downturn reflects multiple structural headwinds. High channel inventory levels, weaker banquet driven demand, and growing competition from domestic Chinese wine production have all weighed on inbound bulk wine buying.

However, import value held steady, indicating Chinese buyers are trending toward higher quality bottled imports rather than low cost bulk products.

Japan’s market meanwhile demonstrates stable everyday drink demand across retail, restaurants and hospitality.

While total volume is flat, rising import value signals consumers are trading up to better priced wine labels, supported by well established on trade distribution and mature wine drinking culture.

Industry participants emphasise an important distinction: import statistics do not equal total national wine consumption. China maintains substantial domestic wine production from Ningxia and Xinjiang regions, which is not counted within import figures.

Japan’s local wine output remains relatively small, so nearly all wine consumed commercially is imported.

The development is prompting global wine exporters to reassess their Asia strategies. For many international producers, Japan now represents a higher volume import destination, even as China remains a critical high value premium market for fine wine.
