SIGNS OF RECOVERY IN HONG KONG’S RARE SPIRITS AUCTION MARKET

Hong Kong’s auction market for collectable whisky and vintage cognac is showing tentative, tier-specific signs of recovery, with hard auction sale results revealing renewed bidding momentum for blue-chip spirits, even as mid-tier bottles struggle to regain former price levels.

Latest sales data from Sotheby’s and Bonhams confirm the uneven market rebound. At Bonhams’ live spirits auction on 30 May, a Yamazaki 50 Year Old, distilled exclusively for Club Natsume, fetched a new record HKD8.25 million (USD1.05 million), more than doubling its pre-sale upper estimate of HKD3.2 million.

Meanwhile, Sotheby’s first dedicated online cognac auction, held from 20 May to 3 June 2026, posted a 95  percent lot sell-through rate, generating total sale proceeds of HKD2.2 million. The blockbuster result was reinforced across the same “A Dialogue of Time” themed sale, where premium grade Hibiki 30YO Ceramic Aritayaki sold for HKD62,500, around 26 percent higher than its comparable 2020 auction price.

Nearly 75 percent of successful bidders were based in mainland China and Hong Kong, with remaining buyer interest drawn from Southeast Asia and North America.

Despite these headline successes, the market upturn remains narrow. Many mid-collectible lots without verified provenance still trade well below the speculative peaks seen a decade ago.

A 1975 Karuizawa single cask realised HKD100,000, less than half the HK$225,000 hammer price achieved for the same bottling back in 2023.

“Buyers are returning with very clear priorities,” commented a Hong Kong based spirits market analyst. “They are no longer speculating across every vintage release. They are selectively chasing top tier, fully documented bottles with established collector credibility.”

Industry participants warned that broad based market recovery is not yet assured. Persistent global economic uncertainty continues to cap overall auction turnover for the remainder of 2026, with any meaningful price rebound largely confined to the very top segment of the collectable spirits category.
