THAI AUTHORITIES STEP UP ENFORCEMENT OF ALCOHOL HEALTH WARNING

Thai customs authorities have intensified nationwide inspections on imported wine, spirits and alcoholic ready-to-drink products, strictly enforcing mandatory Thai-language health warning labelling requirements for all inbound alcohol shipments.

Under the country’s updated alcohol control regulations enforced since late 2025, all retail alcohol packaging must display standardised Thai health warnings with specified font sizes, covering underage sales bans, drink-driving risks and youth consumption prohibitions.

No imported alcoholic goods are exempt from the rule, including stock sold at airports, resorts and tourist retail outlets.

Officials have boosted physical screening at major entry points, including Suvarnabhumi Airport cargo terminals, Laem Chabang Port and cross-border land checkpoints.

Shipments without clearly printed Thai warnings are detained immediately. Importers are required to re-label non-compliant products at their own expense, while persistent violations will result in full stock seizure.

Breaches of the law carry penalties of up to THB100,000 (USD3015) in fines, with repeat offenders facing licence suspension and criminal charges. The regulations also ban small-volume mini alcohol bottles to reduce reckless and underage drinking.

The tightened enforcement has disrupted regional alcohol supply chains, delaying customs clearance for imported European wine, Japanese whisky and regional spirits.

Industry distributors have been urged to conduct pre-shipment packaging reviews to meet Thailand’s labelling standards.

Public health authorities said the stricter rules aim at curbing youth alcohol consumption and lower alcohol-related traffic accidents and public health risks, signalling possible future adoption of graphic warning labels to strengthen regulatory oversight.
