Wine imports in Hong Kong showed signs of stabilisation in 2025 after three consecutive years of decline.

According to data from Hong Kong authorities, the total value of wine imports reached USD910 million, marking a 0.97 percent increase compared to the previous year.

However, the total volume imported dropped by 6.8 percent, totalling 272,400 hectoliters. This modest rebound was mainly driven by strong demand for French wines.

France remains Hong Kong’s leading wine supplier, accounting for 88,100 hectoliters, a 6.3 percent increase in volume, and €552 million (USD642m) in value, up by 9.8 percent.

French wines now represent 70 percent of Hong Kong’s wine import market share.

New Zealand and China also saw significant growth as suppliers in 2025. Imports from New Zealand rose by 22 percent in value, while Chinese wine imports surged by 139 percent.

Despite these positive signals, the Hong Kong wine market remains much smaller than its peak in 2021, when imports reached USD1.47 billion.

Hong Kong continues to serve as a regional hub for wine trade due to its zero-duty policy on wine imports. However, its role as a gateway to mainland China has diminished.

Chinese import channels have become more mature and efficient, reducing reliance on Hong Kong as an entry point.

The incomplete recovery of tourism in Hong Kong has also affected local demand for imported wines.

In addition, competition from neighbouring cities such as Shenzhen and Guangzhou is increasing. These cities offer competitive prices that attract consumers who might otherwise purchase wine in Hong Kong.

Industry observers note that while the stabilisation of import values is encouraging for suppliers and traders, challenges remain for the territory’s wine sector.

The combination of changing trade routes, evolving consumer preferences, and regional competition continues to shape the outlook for wine imports into Hong Kong.
