S. KOREA: MANDATORY DRINK-DRIVING WARNING ON ALCOHOL FROM NOVEMBER

South Korea will require all alcoholic beverages sold in the country to carry drink-driving warning labels, the new government regulations will take effect on 9 November 2026.

Announced by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the rule applies to all local and imported alcohol, including soju, beer, wine and spirits.

Products must display either standardised graphic icons or printed text warning consumers against drink-driving, alongside existing health advisories for excessive alcohol intake and pregnancy risks.

Under the enforcement timeline, alcohol manufactured or imported after 19 March 2026 must comply with the new labelling standards.

Existing inventories without the warning labels will be permitted for retail sale until 8 May 2027, offering a six-month industry grace period.

The policy comes amid persistent alcohol-related traffic safety concerns. Official police data recorded more than 10,000 drunk-driving accidents across South Korea last year, prompting renewed regulatory action to strengthen public awareness at the point of purchase.

Health authorities stated visible, consistent labelling is intended to curb risky drinking behaviour and reduce road fatalities linked to impaired driving.

Local beverage operators and importers have raised practical concerns over packaging redesign costs and inventory adjustments.

Some industry representatives added that prominent warning graphics may undermine product shelf presentation and affect consumer appeal, particularly among younger adult buyers.

The new labelling requirement forms part of South Korea’s ongoing public health campaign to mitigate alcohol harm, amid a gradual domestic shift towards lower-alcohol beverages and portion-sized drinking products.
