Carlsberg Malaysia has officially introduced Chongqing Beer to the domestic market, marking the iconic Chinese lager’s first launch in Southeast Asia, with local production set to begin nationwide distribution in June.

Brewed on-site at Carlsberg’s Shah Alam facility instead of imported from China, the 3.8 percent ABV lager brings a decades-old Chinese beer staple to Malaysian consumers.

Established in 1958, Chongqing Beer is widely recognised across China as a staple pairing for hotpot and communal dining occasions. The Malaysian variant will be sold in signature 490ml red-gold cans.

Distribution will kick off exclusively through more than 2,000 99 Speedmart outlets across Malaysia, targeting adult non-Muslim drinkers aged 21 and above.

The market entry leverages Carlsberg Group’s long-standing ownership of Chongqing Beer, following its acquisition of controlling stakes in 2013.

The regional expansion forms part of the local brewer’s strategy to diversify its product portfolio and capitalise on rising consumer appetite for authentic Chinese food and beverage offerings in Malaysia.

Local brewing enables faster restocking, stable pricing and consistent flavour alignment with the original recipe, according to Li ZiKun, Carlsberg Malaysia’s first Asian Supply Chain Director and a veteran brewmaster who began his career with ChongQing Beer in China.

“Staying true to its original character—refreshing, smooth, and easy-drinking—is our priority,” Li said at the launch ceremony. “Brewing this iconic beer here in Shah Alam is a proud milestone for our team.”

Stefano Clini, Managing Director of Carlsberg Malaysia, stated that the launch aligns with shifting local consumption trends toward culturally rooted beverage brands.

Industry observers note the debut strengthens Carlsberg Malaysia’s positioning in the mid-tier lager segment amid intensifying competition in Malaysia’s alcoholic beverage market.
