Malaysia joins Taiwan in producing tropical expression of whiskies that have won international recognition.

Malaysian-produced blended whisky, Timah Double Peated Blended Whiskey, recently won a silver medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

It’s the first time a Malaysian-produced whisky has won an award at international spirits competition.

Produced by Winepak Corporation, the blended whisky has been matured over eight years and is described as boasting a gentle tropical peatiness with subtle verdant flavours and light fruity notes.

Timah, which means tin in Malay, competed in the category which welcomes entries from non-traditional whisky producing regions.

According to competition organiser, silver medal is awarded to "outstanding spirits" that display "refinement, finesse and complexity", "among the best examples of their categories".

The bottle features an image of Captain Tristram Speedy, the famed 19th-century explorer who sailed his way to the Straits Settlements in Malaya and became Penang’s superintendent of police.

“His spirit of conquest and thirst for adventure is encased in the light embers of Timah,” Winepak managing director Gilbert Yeo told local media.

In Winepak’s own description, “Timah is imbued with a gentle tropical fruit peatiness that stays bright without undue intensity.” “Unassuming notes for the nose make for an easy welcome to this dram, as a faintly floral flavour starts and is caravanned through for a breezy smooth finish. Before the taste of this light palate, a robust intensity greets the senses with a playful thrill before subduing into a sweet lingering warmth.”

Malaysia’s tropical climate means whisky is maturing two to three times faster than in Scotland or Ireland. However, the warm and humid climate means a higher evaporation loss of about 5% to 10%, compared to 2% to 3% for Scotch and Irish whiskies.

The Puchong-based company said it is working on expressions with age statement 12 years or older and is planning to market Timah to the USA and the rest of the world.
